BioPhysical Properties Laboratory The
661 sq. ft. BioPhysical Properties Laboratory contains instrumentation
including two universal testing machines used for the measurement
of mechanical properties of food, feed, agricultural and biological
materials. Recent studies have utilized the equipment to measure
flow properties of powders, texture of pecans after various moisture
and freezing treatments, surface friction of fruit in relation
to abrasion resistance, and penetration force to predict fruit
quality & ripeness. Testing has also been done in cooperation
with faculty in Nutritional Science to measure properties of
bones from rats on special diets and with Veterinary Medicine
on surgical practices to repair and prevent bone injuries to
animals. The photograph shows Dr.
Gerald Brusewitz holding a shear cell in the MTS machine
to determine internal flow properties of consolidated, ground
marigold petal powder. |
